Description
Portrait of Maria von Cranach.
Karl Wilhelm Lucas von Cranach, also Lucas Sunder - September 27, 1861 in Stargard; † March 31, 1918 in Berlin - was German painter, etcher, architect and one of the leading German Art Nouveau jewelry designers.
His parents were the Prussian government councilor Adolf von Cranach (1823-1896) and his wife Johanna, nee Mampe (* 1827). His brother Hans (1855-1929) was Burghauptmann of the Wartburg.
Cranach came from a well-known family of artists and studied at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar. After a stay in Paris, he settled in Berlin as an artist in 1893. In addition to landscape and portrait paintings, he designed furniture and, from the 1890s, jewelry. He is known for his Art Nouveau jewelry design, mostly executed by the Berlin court jewelers Gebrüder Friedländer and Louis Werner. In 1900 he won a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris for Werner's jewelry.
