Description
Very large and impressive monument to Francis I, the first Emperor of Austria and the last Holy Roman Emperor.
"This large bronze and stone monument is located in the central courtyard of the Hofburg Palace and is dedicated to the memory of the first Emperor of Austria, Francis I (who ruled from 1804-1835) and who as Francis II was the last Holy Roman Emperor having ruled from 1792 - 1806. Francis was born in Florence in 1768 and died in Vienna in 1835,
The monument has a brass statue of Francis in the long flowing classical robes of a Roman Emperor with a laurel wreath on his head, his right arm outstretched and his left hand holding a sceptre with a cross on top of it.
The brass statue sits atop an octagonal plinth which itself is located on top of a square stone platform that has protruding corners. The plinth has eight brass reliefs, one on each face, depicting science, trade, industrial production, mining, agriculture, livestock, art and arts of war.
Sitting on the four protruding corners of the platform are bronze statues of seated women representing religion, peace, justice and strength.
The monument is the work of Italian sculptor Pompeo Marchesi and was unveiled in 1846.The monument was commissioned by Francis's son, Emperor Ferdinand I.
