Description
Giewont - Sleeping Knight
This characteristic peak of the Western Tatras is one of the symbols of Zakopane. The Giewont massif, towering over the city and visible from the center, is hard to confuse with another peak. Despite the fact that there are higher peaks in its immediate vicinity, Giewont, thanks to its location and steep northern walls descending to the foot of Zakopane, with its 1894 m above sea level, seems to be the highest in the area. Its southern slopes, invisible from the city side, are much more gentle.
The Legend of the Sleeping Knight
Why is Giewont easy to recognize, unlike other Tatra peaks? First of all, due to the shape resembling the profile of a lying human. Legend has it that it is the Sleeping Knight who guards Zakopane, or even the whole of Poland, and in case of danger, he will rise to come to the rescue. There are many legends associated with it, eagerly told by local highlanders. Although they often differ in details, the most important thing remains the same - the Sleeping Knight
