Description
Czyżów Szlachecki is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Zawichost, within Sandomierz County, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, in south-central Poland. It lies approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) north-west of Zawichost, 17 km (11 mi) north of Sandomierz, and 82 km (51 mi) east of the regional capital Kielce. The Czyżów Szlachecki Castle is located in the village.
The location of the palace in Czyżów Szlachecki clearly suggests that it had something to do with the defensive structure. And in fact, when we go around the entire complex, we will see a fragment of old cellars in the artificial mound. This is probably the only remnant of the unknown Czyżowski Castle. The palace itself is an impressive late baroque residence with cloisters and two alcove turrets. Overall it looks very nice. It was modeled on the Lubomirski Palace in Puławy, but it was distinguished by a very rich decoration of the pediment, made by the Jesuit sculptor Tomasz Hutter. It was supposed to dazzle the arriving guests and symbolize the heroic family traditions. According to experts, the palace fits perfectly with the late Baroque style of Habsburg architecture.
Today's entrance to the palace is not original. Only the pillars of the gate and the remains of a bridge over a small river, probably once a moat, remain after the old one. There is a pond next to the palace.
